How do I log Apple Pay automatically?

You set up one automation in Apple's Shortcuts app. It takes a minute or two, and Sortd's setup shows a picture of every step. You can also find it later in Settings › Purchase Sources › Apple Pay Logging.

The steps depend on your iOS, and Sortd shows the right ones for your iPhone. Not sure which you have? Open your iPhone's Settings › General › About and look at iOS Version.

The quick way on iOS 27 or later

1. Get the shortcut. Get the ready‑made shortcut on your iPhone. A page opens. Tap Open in "Shortcuts", then tap Add Shortcut. It already knows which part of the payment is the amount, the shop and the card.
2. Run it once and tap Allow. In Shortcuts, tap Log Apple Pay in Sortd to run it (or press ▶ if it is open). Tap Allow, then come back to Sortd.
3. Turn both automations on. The shortcut has two "When…" lines (the tap and Wallet's notification). Tap › next to each line and switch on Automation.
4. Bank doesn't send Wallet a notification? Tap + next to Wallet under "When I receive a notification" and add your bank's app. Turn on purchase alerts in that app. Some banks, like ANZ and CommBank, need this.

That's it. Pay with Apple Pay and it shows up in Sortd.

On iOS 26

On iOS 26 you build the automation yourself. There is no shortcut to download: a downloaded shortcut can't log a tap on iOS 26 (it shows "Automation failed").

Made a Wallet automation for Sortd before? Delete it first. In Shortcuts, tap Automation, swipe left on it and tap Delete.

1. In Shortcuts, tap Automation at the bottom, then New Automation.
2. Tap the Search box at the bottom and type Wallet. Tap Wallet in the list. If the list goes empty, delete the space after the word: the keyboard adds one when you tap its suggestion.
3. Tap each card you pay with. Tap Run Immediately, then tap Next at the top right.
4. Tap Create New Shortcut. Scroll down and tap Sortd, then tap Log Wallet Tap. Don't pick a shortcut under My Shortcuts (unless you built it yourself, see below).
5. Tap Amount, then Shortcut Input above the keyboard. Now tap Shortcut Input again and choose Amount. This second tap is the part people miss: without it, iOS says "couldn't convert from Transaction to Text" and nothing is logged.
6. Do the same for Shop (choose Merchant). Tap the blue ›, then Card, choose Shortcut Input, then Card or Pass.
7. Switch off Show When Run. It is under Card. Then tap Done at the top right.

That's it. Pay with Apple Pay in a shop and it shows up in Sortd.

Sortd isn't in the list?

Open Sortd once and wait ten seconds. Then restart your iPhone and try the automation again. iOS sometimes takes a moment to list a new app.

Still missing? Build the shortcut yourself, then pick it. This is the one time picking from My Shortcuts is right: a shortcut you build is trusted; a downloaded one isn't.

1. In Shortcuts, tap Shortcuts at the bottom, then +.
2. In the search box, type Sortd and tap Log Wallet Tap.
3. Tap Amount, then Shortcut Input, then tap Shortcut Input again and choose Amount. Do the same for Shop (choose Merchant). Tap the blue ›, then Card: Shortcut Input, then Card or Pass.
4. Switch off Show When Run, tap Done, and name it Log Wallet Tap.
5. Now tap Automation, then New Automation, then Wallet. Tick your cards, tap Run Immediately, then Next.
6. Under My Shortcuts, tap Log Wallet Tap. That's it.

By hand on iOS 27 or later

1. Open Shortcuts and tap + at the bottom. On the next screen tap Edit at the top right.
2. Tap the blue Automation chip under the search box, type wallet, then tap Wallet. The shortcut now starts with "When Any Card is tapped".
3. In the search box at the bottom, type Sortd and tap Log Wallet Tap.
4. Tap Amount, then Select Variable, then Shortcut Input. Now tap that blue word again and choose Amount. This second tap is the part people miss: without it, iOS says "couldn't convert from Transaction to Text" and nothing is logged.
5. Do the same for Shop (choose Merchant). Tap › to show Card and choose Card or Pass.
6. Tap back to save. That's it.

Pressing ▶ in Shortcuts is only a test. It has no purchase in it, so nothing is saved. Pay with Apple Pay to log a real one. Taps in shops log from the tap. On iOS 27 or later, payments in apps and on websites log from a notification, from Wallet or from your bank's app. Before iOS 27, only taps in shops are logged.

A tap shows the wrong shop, amount or card

Open Settings › Purchase Sources › Apple Pay Logging in Sortd and press and hold the status card at the top. Last Tap Received shows exactly what Apple Pay sent. If the shop or amount came in blank, Sortd still saves the purchase and marks it Needs a check, so you can fix it in Activity.

Why wasn't a purchase logged?

• Apple's trigger missed it. Apple's Wallet trigger sometimes misses a payment, most often at vending machines, transport gates and parking. Sortd sees when a payment arrives, not your automation.
• It was in an app or on a website. Those need iOS 27 or later, both automations switched on, and a notification from Wallet or from your bank's app. If your bank doesn't make Wallet show one, add your bank's app to the shortcut (step 4 of the iOS 27 steps above).
• The bank was late. Apple's trigger waits for your bank to confirm a tap and gives up if it is slow, most often at transport gates, parking and vending. Adding your bank's app to the notification trigger catches these too. Also worth checking: Summarize Notifications is off in Settings › Notifications › Wallet, and Mobile Data is on in Settings › Apps › Wallet.
• It wasn't Apple Pay. Cash, and cards that aren't in Apple Pay, are never seen.
• Got the shortcut before 9 October? Delete the old one first: in Shortcuts, press and hold Log Apple Pay in Sortd and tap Delete. Then get the new one from the setup page, turn both automations on, and add your bank's app again. The new one tells Sortd which app each notification came from. If you skip the delete, two automations run.

You can always add the purchase by hand (the + button), scan the receipt with the camera, or import a statement in Settings › Backup & Data › Import.

Which last 4 digits should I enter for a card?

Sortd matches purchases to your cards by their last 4 digits. A card can have two numbers:

• Card number: the last 4 digits printed on your card or shown in your bank's app. Receipts and statements usually show this one.
• Apple Pay number (Device Account Number): Apple Pay pays with its own number, so Apple Pay receipts and taps often show this instead. Find it in Wallet › your card › ••• › Card Details › Device Account Number.

Add them in Settings › Cards & Appearance › Cards: tap a card and fill in Last 4 Digits. If you have two cards from the same bank, add the Apple Pay number of each, because that's the only way to tell them apart when you tap. Sortd only ever uses the last 4 digits, never the full number.

How do currencies work?

• Purchase currency: if Apple Pay sends the currency with the amount, Sortd uses it. If not, a tap in a shop uses the currency of the country you're in, which Sortd reads from your iPhone's time zone (from build 7; older builds only did this in Australia, Singapore and Malaysia). A payment in an app or on a website uses the card's currency.
• Totals are shown in your home currency. Change it in Settings › Currency › Show Totals In.
• Purchases in other currencies are converted using that day's European Central Bank rate, downloaded from frankfurter.dev. On weekends and holidays the most recent earlier rate is used. Tap Update Exchange Rates if a conversion is missing.

Converted amounts are estimates. Your bank's rate and fees may differ.

How do I change my check‑in or setup answers?

• Check‑in: Settings › Bills & Reminders › Check‑In. Pick Each morning, Each evening, Sunday recap, or Off. It never shows amounts.
• Setup answers: Settings › Help & Feedback › Run Setup Again. Your purchases and cards stay as they are.

If the check‑in never arrives, notifications may be off for Sortd. Turn them on in your iPhone's Settings › Notifications › Sortd.

How do I delete my data?

• Everything: Settings › Backup & Data › Delete All Data. This removes every purchase, card, budget, setting and setup answer from your iPhone, and turns off your check‑in and reminders. If iCloud backup is on, the iCloud copy goes too, and if you're signed in, you're signed out. It can't be undone.
• A copy first: Settings › Backup & Data › Save a Backup, or Export as Spreadsheet.

Your purchases are only on your iPhone (and in your own iCloud, if you turned on iCloud backup), so we can't delete them for you, and we can't restore them after you delete them.

How do I back up to iCloud, or move to a new iPhone?

• Turn it on: Settings › Backup & Data › Back up to iCloud. Sortd encrypts your purchases on your iPhone first, and keeps them up to date by itself. Tap Back Up Now to save straight away.
• On a new iPhone: sign in to the same Apple Account with iCloud Keychain on, open Sortd, and tap Restore from iCloud. Choose Add What's Missing or Replace Everything.
• Turn it off: switch it off and choose whether to delete the iCloud copy or keep it.

How does App Lock work?

Settings › Privacy & Security › Require Face ID. Sortd then asks for Face ID (or Touch ID) when you open it, and takes your iPhone passcode if that fails. You choose how soon it locks again after you leave: straight away, or after a short while.

• Nothing extra to remember: it uses the Face ID and passcode already on your iPhone. iOS does the check and only tells Sortd yes or no.
• Logging keeps working: Apple Pay purchases are still logged while Sortd is locked.
• Widgets: shop names are hidden while your iPhone is locked. Amounts follow Show Amounts When Locked.

What stays on my iPhone?

Your purchases, cards, budgets and settings. So do your setup answers, the notifications Sortd makes, the receipt reading, and the summary your widgets show. None of it is sent to us.

What can leave: an encrypted copy to your own iCloud, if you turn on iCloud backup, and usage counts and crash reports, which never include what you bought. The privacy policy has the full list.

Do I need an account?

No. Every feature works without one. If you want, Settings › Account lets you sign in with Apple or Google. It helps us find you if you ask for help. Your purchases stay on your iPhone either way, and signing in with Google doesn't give Sortd your Gmail.

• Sign out: Settings › Account › Sign Out. Your purchases stay.
• Delete your account: Settings › Account › Delete Account. Sortd asks Apple or Google to cancel the sign‑in and deletes your usage record. Choose Delete Account and All Data to wipe the app too.

How do I turn off usage data?

Settings › Privacy & Security › Privacy › Share usage data. Sortd counts which features get used and sends crash reports so we can fix them. It never sends amounts, shops, card digits or email. The one switch turns off both. See the privacy policy for exactly what's sent.

Is Sortd really free?

Yes. Every feature is free, for everyone. No subscription, no trial, no ads. If you paid for something in the app and want a refund, ask Apple at reportaproblem.apple.com.

What's new?

• 1.0 (beta): the first TestFlight build. Apple Pay logging, the receipt camera, statement import, budgets, subscriptions and bills, Insights, widgets, App Lock and iCloud backup.
