How to track Apple Pay spending automatically on iPhone
By Raj and the Sortd team · Last updated 11 October 2026
Your iPhone sees every Apple Pay purchase, but it doesn't keep one running list of your spending across all your cards. There are three ways to get that list. They differ in how much you set up and how much they do for you.
1. Look in the Wallet app
Open Wallet and tap a card to see its latest transactions. This needs no setup at all.
It shows one card at a time, and what it shows depends on your bank. It doesn't add up a month across cards, sort purchases into categories or tell you how a budget is going. It is fine for checking a single payment and not much more.
2. Build your own with Shortcuts
Apple's Shortcuts app has a Wallet automation that runs when you tap a card. You can have it take the payment's details and add a row to a spreadsheet in Numbers or Google Sheets.
This is free and you control every part of it. You also keep it running yourself: if a step breaks after an iOS update, you fix it. You need to sort and total the rows yourself, and before iOS 27 the automation only runs for taps in shops, not for payments in apps or on websites.
3. Use an app that logs it for you
Sortd is a free iPhone spending tracker built on the same Wallet automation, so you set it up once and then leave it alone. After that:
- Each Apple Pay tap in a shop is logged by itself, with the shop, the amount and the card.
- On iOS 27 or later, payments in apps and on websites are logged too, from Wallet's notification or your bank's app.
- Purchases are sorted into categories, and Sortd finds the subscriptions you're paying for.
- Purchases in other currencies keep their own currency and are converted to your home currency at that day's European Central Bank rate.
There is no bank login. Your purchases stay on your iPhone, and Sortd never sees them. Every feature is free, with no ads.
Setting it up takes a few minutes: you add one automation in Shortcuts, and the app shows a picture of every step. The full steps for iOS 26 and iOS 27 are on the support page.
What Apple Pay tracking can't see
Any method built on Apple Pay only sees Apple Pay. Cash and cards that aren't in Wallet never show up. Apple's Wallet trigger also misses a payment now and then, most often at vending machines, transport gates and parking, usually because the bank was slow to confirm the tap.
In Sortd you can fill those gaps by adding a purchase by hand, scanning a paper receipt with the camera, or importing a bank statement. A purchase that is already in Sortd is counted once.

Questions
Does it need my bank login?
No. All three ways above work from Apple Pay on your iPhone. None of them connect to your bank.
Does it work with my bank?
The tap in a shop works with any card you've added to Apple Pay, in any country. Payments in apps and on websites need a notification from Wallet or your bank's app, and some banks only send one if you turn on purchase alerts in their app.
Which iPhone do I need?
Sortd needs iOS 26 or later. To check, open Settings › General › About and look at iOS Version.
